Klafthmonos is a central square in Athens, located on Stadiou street. Apart from being home to some very interesting buildings, it also has a very interesting name. You see if we had to translate it in English it would be “Cry Square”. It got that name, because in the past, whenever a new government came to power it would fire the civil servants that where appointed by the previous government so as to hire its own voters. So those fired and disgruntled civil servants would gather here outside the Ministry of Finance which was housed in the square to protest against their firing. Η Πλατεία Κλαυθμώνος είναι μια κεντρική πλατεία στην Αθήνα, στην οδό Σταδίου. Εκτός από τα πολύ ωραία κτίρια που διαθέτει, έχει κι ένα ενδιαφέρον όνομα! Το όνομα το απέκτησε διότι στο παρελθόν η εκάστοτε νέα κυβέρνηση απέλυε τους Δημοσίους υπαλλήλους που είχε προσλάβει η προηγούμενη, προκειμένου να προσλάβει τους δικούς της ψηφοφόρους. Έτσι λοιπόν οι απελυμένοι υπάλληλοι μαζευόντουσαν στην πλατεία αυτή, μιας και εδώ στεγαζόταν το Υπουργείο Οικονομικών για να διαμαρτυρηθούν. Την ιστορία μπορείτε να τη διαβάσετε εδώ.
So, what’s there to see here today? Well for starters the City of Athens Museum, which I’ve blogged about in the past (still haven’t got the chance to visit though). It’s the square’s most beautiful building and used to be the first residence of King Otto when he arrived in Greece back in 1836!
Τι θα βρείτε σήμερα εδώ? Για αρχή το Μουσείο της Πόλης των Αθηνών, για το οποίο έχω γράψει στο παρελθόν (αλλά δεν έχω επισκεφτεί ακόμα). Είναι το ομορφότερο κτίριο της πλατείας και ήταν η πρώτη κατοικία του βασιλιά Όθωνα όταν ήρθε στην Ελλάδα το 1836!
Next there’s a modern concrete building, which is a rarity in Athens (modern buildings that is). It is rumored to be the new building for the Engineer’s and Public Work Contractors Union Fund aka TSMEDE (don’t know if I translated well, as their site provides no English translation at all). I’m pretty sure it’s still vacant though.
Εν συνεχεία έχουμε ένα μοντέρνο κτίριο από μπετόν, σπάνιο για την Αθήνα (το μοντέρνο κτίριο, γιατί από μπετόν έχει μπόλικο). Φημολογείτε ότι είναι το νέο κτίριο του ΤΣΜΕΔΕ. Είμαι σίγουρη ότι είναι ακόμα άδειο!
In the middle of the square there is a statue depicting three people joining hands. The name of the statue is National Reconciliation. It was created by sculptor Vasilis Doropoulos and was placed there in 1989. The square was re-named to National Reconciliation square, but the name was never used! (information found here, in Greek).
Στη μέση της πλατείας βρίσκεται ένα γλυπτό με τρεις φιγούρες που ενώνουν τα χέρια. Απεικονίζει την Εθνική Συμφιλίωση, είναι δημιουργία του γλύπτη Βασίλη Δωρόπουλο και τοποθετήθηκε το 1989. Η πλατεία μετονομάστηκε σε πλατεία Εθνικής Συμφιλίωσης, όνομα όμως που δε χρησιμοποιήθηκε ποτέ! (πληροφορίες από εδώ).
A few more notable buildings are located in Stadiou street just opposite the square. One is a corner building that now houses a Zara store. It was inaugurated in 2008 and marked Inditex’ (Zara’s parent company) first eco-efficient store. The other one is a few buildings further than Zara and was once a bookstore called Librairie Kauffman, which used to sell French books. Now the company is bankrupt as far as I know and the building is abandoned.
P.S. Need inspiration on what to see next? Really close to Klafthmonos square is the National Library and the Academy of Athens.
Μερικά ενδιαφέροντα κτίρια βρίσκονται από τη μεριά της οδού Σταδίου απέναντι από την πλατεία. Το ένα είναι γωνιακό κτίριο (με τον πεζόδρομο της Κοραή) και στεγάζει το κατάστημα Zara. Εγκαινιάστηκε το 2008 και αποτελεί το πρώτο οικολογικά αποδοτικό κατάστημα του ομίλου Inditex (μητρική εταιρία του Zara). Το άλλο, είναι ένα κτίριο παραδίπλα από το Zara που κάποτε ήταν το γαλλόφωνο βιβλιοπωλείο Κάουφμαν. Σήμερα η εταρία έχει χρεοκοπήσει από όσο ξέρω και το κτίριο είναι εγκαταλελημένο!
